R & D Centers
The
Central R&D Center
HMC's Central R&D Center, located at Yongin-gun, Kyunggi-do,
is the main headquarters for research and development on engines,
core
technologies, and automatic transmissions. This research center
introduced the alpha and beta engines followed by the delta engine,
all of which were developed in-house, ably demonstrating the capability
and engineering for H developing high-performance engines.
Ulsan Passenger Car R&O Center No. 1
Located in Ulsan, this research center has been 9 involved in
developing small-sized passenger cars, a. trucks, and buses, as well
as new materials with an j? emphasis on technological competitiveness.
Namyang Passenger Car R&D Center No. 2
This research center is one of the big ten in the world with
high-tech automobile development facilities, capable
of planning,
testing, and researching. The Namyang center occupies an area of
3.3 million m", one of the world's largest, where middle and large
sized passenger cars, and electric cars are tested. Also, at this
site we develop future concept cars and test their performance capabilities.
Ulsan
Design R&D Center
Design Research Centers in both Ulsan and Namyang are charged with
developing styling in areas such as color for both passenger cars
and commercial vehicles. By introducing the Elantra/Lantra and Hyundai
Coupe models to the global market, this research center has already
received recognition for its design capability and capacity to be a
leader in worldwide automobile design trends.
Chonju Commercial Vehicle R&D Center
Divided into three fields - management, planning, and evaluation -
this research center, the largest in Korea, is charged with developing
middle and large sized commercial vehicles and performing research on
more than 100 different models.

Production Facilities
Ulsan Plant
Located in Ulsan, this plant has the annual production capacity of 1.25 million cars.
It occupies 4.8 million m2, which is the largest concentrated
automobile assembly plant in the worid. Automation rates for press
and body lines are at 95%, while all production lines nave i reached 80%,
insuring delivery of cars of superb quality and excellent performance.
Asan Plant
Located in Asan, this plant is the premier high- tech manufacturing plant for the 21 st century,
producing an annual 300,000 unit of high-tech, high-
performance passenger cars in a plant area
covering 1.8 million m2.
Chonju Plant
Located in Chonju, this plant which specializes in manufacturing commercial
vehicles, turns out 100,000 top quality and performance units annually,
the world's largest in its scale.
Turkey Plant
In order to participate in the European and the Middle Eastern markets, this overseas plant has been established as HMC's strategic marketing base
for these areas. This plant occupies an area of 1 million m2, and is capable of assembling 60,000 units
of the Accent and H 100 models, passenger and commercial.
DIndia Plant
HMC's India plant in Chennai, Madras, is the first overseas, self-sufficient and all-inclusive
manufacturing facility established by a Korean automobile firm. The Chennai Rant occupies
2.2 million m2, assembling an annual 200,000 units with facilities and capabilities of handling
R&D, planning, testing, parts development, i production, domestic sales and exports through its
own initiative. |
